I like nonsense. It wakes up the brain cells.

This is a coloring I did late last night (technically today), and had so much fun with!

From 'When Octopods Dream' by Laura Medeiros

Without knowing exactly what they were supposed to be, I colored the strange plants like radishes or beets... which seems entirely unrelated to the under-the-sea theme of the rest of the picture. However, given the title of the book, When Octopods Dream, they could very well be vegetables! Who knows what a squid dreams about!

UPDATE 6/14/2016: Turns out, these "radishes" are actually giant sea kelp! Special
thanks to Laura, the author/artist, for this clarification! ;)

Meditating with Cupcakes!

This post contains affiliate links.

I spent small amounts of time over the past several days coloring this adorable cupcake page from artist Cheri Shull's book, Karleigh Sue's Doodle Therapy.

As I was coloring, I realized just how relaxing this was. I mean, I completely got in the "zone." It's the feeling when you're doing something so relaxing, the world around you seems to disappear... problems are non-existent, time completely stops, and your only focus is the pretty colors on the paper beneath your hand.

I realized that this is the reason why so many people love to color mandalas. The designs on mandalas are repetitive in nature, and it's that repetitiveness that creates a zen-like feeling. Much like how monks repeat the same words or phrases over and over in their daily prayers, and they report having mystical experiences during these sessions!

Don't try this at home.

While I'm not an expert on the mind-body connection, I do know that the key to effective meditation is repetitiveness. Repetitively pulling your thoughts back to one single awareness, or repeating the same mantra over and over until all other thoughts are washed away brings about effective, calming meditation experiences. With repetitive coloring, we're essentially meditating! Or, in the very least, setting the stage for a meditative experience.

Meditation is healthy for anyone from any walk of life, and it is highly recommended by psychologists around the world. Take a moment to notice the calm, peaceful mindfulness you feel while coloring repetitive pictures and mandalas. Notice how your mind seems to be clear of any bothersome or demanding thoughts or stresses. You have achieved meditation!

I encourage everyone to do a little bit of research about simple, easy ways to incorporate meditation into your daily life. It's much easier than you might think - it is not religious or spiritual (unless you want it to be), it doesn't require you to follow any sort of uncomfortable schedule or regimen, and you don't have to sit in weird yoga positions while you do it! And best of all, you can do it ANY TIME. It's an exercise of the mind, and you are in total control!

When you're done, enjoy a cupcake! You've earned it!

Imagery From Beyond: A Messages From Beyond Coloring Book (Volumes 1 & 2) by Alice Best Jackson & Dennis Jackson

I first became interested in the work of Alice Best Jackson and Dennis Jackson when I attended a day-long online artist's showcase event. Alice was one of the featured artists during this event, and the interesting abstract images caught my eye. That evening following the event, I spent some time reading about Alice and Dennis, the story of how they came together, and the incredible talents they hold. I listened to some of their podcast recordings, and was enthralled!

Alice holds the incredible gift of intuitive drawing. With these drawings, she created a book (Volume 1), along with the second one months later (Volume 2). The images are each unique, and everyone tends to see different things upon looking at them. It's this awesome interaction that allows the colorist to define each image as their own with color!

In the front of this book, you'll find Dennis and Alice's own description of the art, short biographies, and a message to the colorist.

Each image page in this book is followed by another page with the same image in greyscale, along with an overlay of positive affirmation words, meant to keep the colorist inspired. Every page is single-sided to allow the colorist to use any medium they choose without ruining anything on the other side.

In the second book you'll find more drawings, only this time they are framed with borders that you can color as well. These designs have more Zendoodle and other designs within them, which make them fun and sometimes whimsical...

Is she dancing?

In addition to the 40 single-sided abstract designs, we also find a bunch of bonus pages! These pages contain various words and phrases that can be used as greeting cards, or whatever your heart desires. There are even some "empty" frames to draw your own designs!

The bonus borders can also be used as a frame or matte for 5x7" photos, for use in an 8x10" frame.
In fact, all of the pages in this book are 8x10" and look stunning in one of the inexpensive all-glass frames you can find for sale just about anywhere!

Book 2 is the perfect coloring book for those times when you're not sure what you'd like to color. It always ensures you'll create something interesting! Click here to buy this book from Amazon: Imagery From Beyond, Volume 2

I strongly encourage everyone to check out Alice and Dennis' website and be fascinated by their incredible story. Their website is or (both sites take you to the same page).

Get Coloring Get Happy To Go 3 by Kim A. Flodin

From the back cover: "This delightful little book contains happy, half-size, hand-drawn designs filled with healing energy for coloring support "on the go". These designs, which range from simple to complex, are half-size versions of the same fun-to-color, stress-relieving designs featured in Get Coloring Get Happy Volumes 1 and 2."

Cover of Get Coloring Get Happy To Go 3 by Kim A. Flodin
This little book is the perfect size to take you everywhere you go! The designs are beautifully hand-drawn, and inspire you give them bright, beautiful colors! The designs are light-hearted and fun, with words like "wonder" and "joy" scattered about.

Some quick facts:
-The book is half the size of a normal coloring book: 8.5" X 5.5"
-The spine of the book is on the side, so it opens like a regular book (some smaller coloring books have the spine at the top)
-The pages are one-sided, so you don't have to worry about bleed-through to another design. (However, if using markers or any medium that may bleed through, place an extra sheet of paper behind the page to catch any bleed-through from getting on the next page)
-There are 20 designs to be colored in the book, plus a forward by the author, and an "about the author" page at the back.

Here are some sample pages from the book:

Some additional pages that I photographed:
